POLICY & FUNDING DEVELOPMENTS
The Education Department is considering plans to offload special education oversight to another federal agency, raising questions about program management and accountability. Concerns remain high even after a temporary hold on federal education layoffs, as advocates warn that instability could disrupt special education services. Disability providers report they are operating on fumes during the government shutdown, while colleges of education are granting fewer teaching degrees, further tightening the teacher pipeline. Districts also face higher H-1B visa fees that may limit recruitment of international educators. The Social Security Administration announced a 2.5% increase in SSI benefits, effective January 2026, to help offset inflation for individuals with disabilities.

RESEARCH & HEALTH ADVANCES
Texas has filed a lawsuit against Tylenol makers alleging the companies misled consumers about potential links between prenatal acetaminophen use and autism or ADHD. Federal officials have stated that current data is insufficient to show causation. Meanwhile, a new NIH-funded autism study is advancing understanding of brain connectivity in neurodevelopmental conditions, and researchers have identified a potential new biomarker for early diagnosis.

LEGAL & WORKPLACE ISSUES
Federal watchdogs report that private Medicare and Medicaid plans exaggerate their in-network mental-health coverage, potentially misleading individuals with disabilities seeking care. Teachers are also experimenting with AI tools to draft IEPs, prompting debate over accuracy, privacy, and compliance. A restaurant designed for children with autism is offering a model for inclusive employment and community engagement.

ACCESSIBILITY & REPRESENTATION
A new PBS feature traces the evolution of Deaf representation in film, highlighting progress toward authentic portrayals and expanded opportunities for Deaf actors and filmmakers.
