POLICY & FEDERAL DEVELOPMENTS Special education is in limbo as the Education Department sheds more responsibilities, leaving districts uncertain about oversight. A new federal autism panel will examine potential causes, shifting research priorities. Troubled by the federal panel overhaul, experts launched their own autism advisory group, maintaining scientific rigor. Some halted federal funds for community schools will flow, though more remain frozen. Questions arise about whether the Education Department will act on recommendations to overhaul its research arm. Key federal education data collections are under review in an agency overhaul.

RESEARCH & HEALTH INSIGHTS University of Cincinnati researchers found there might be 3 different types of ADHD, challenging the current diagnostic framework. A Nature study links ADHD with increased consumption of ultra-processed foods among children, raising dietary intervention questions. Research examines virtual reality interventions for ADHD through a systematic review. Colleges are seeing a spike in students with disabilities, including elite schools.

TEACHING & WORKFORCE One district is using dozens of teacher pathways to fuel its talent pipeline, addressing shortages creatively. Teaching English learners is changing with new approaches emphasizing "they're our kids." Teachers say behavior problems aren't just about students - it's the parents, highlighting family engagement challenges.
