SPECIAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENTS Three charts show how special education enrollment keeps growing, particularly in autism categories under IDEA. On a related note, more students now have access to school counselors according to new data. A shocking investigation found overuse of seclusion and restraint in a district, raising serious civil rights questions. Private equity is increasingly taking over autism therapy centers, raising concerns about profit motives versus patient care.
POLICY & FUNDING DEVELOPMENTS Louisiana is getting modest leeway from the Education Department, raising questions about more waivers to come. The Education Department will send more of its programs to other agencies, continuing the reorganization. In a surprising move, the Supreme Court struck down tariffs in a case brought by educational toy companies. A new federal law has extended respite care programs for families caring for individuals with disabilities. An official pick says "we should not leave any stones unturned" on autism, signaling potential policy shifts.
RESEARCH & HEALTH INSIGHTS New ADHD research challenges former assumptions about the condition. The Smithsonian reports that autism may not be a male-dominated condition after all - women may have it just as often but get diagnosed later in life. Families are calling for increased access to early autism diagnoses and interventions. Durham University researchers developed new approaches for identifying specific learning difficulties.
CURRICULUM & MATERIALS A critical gap exists for older struggling readers, with few books tailored to their needs - described as "an absolute wasteland." Looking for SEL's benefits? Good implementation is key, experts emphasize.
